The review was tested by Mazen Abdallah on a PC running Windows 10, with an 8GB NVIDIA Geforce GTX 1070 fitted on a 4th Generation Intel i7 4790 3.6Ghz CPU and topped with 16GB of RAM. Nidhogg 2 was reviewed using a PC downloadable code of the game provided by Messhof. Online multiplayer has been improved quite a bit, but I still personally prefer local multiplayer for a lot of reasons. This isn’t an indictment of the game, mind you, it’s more a remark on the fact that it’s a game that works best in local multiplayer. Nidhogg 2’s biggest shortcoming is still that it works best when you have a friend over. With more visual detail, the game developer can switch things up more and have new ideas, like a level where one room only shows the silhouettes of the fighters. The new art style has certainly allowed the game to grow in terms of level design, as now levels feel richer and more varied. However, Nidhogg 2’s cartoon style really grew on me, and I felt it was more faithful to the game’s crazy, chaotic violence. The change hasn’t been that positively received, as Nidhogg 1 was more minimal and it felt just right. They’ve decided to boldly evolve the game visually from its 8-bit roots and go with a more colorful and wacky aesthetic. Your main objective is still broadly the same, and despite the presence of some challenge modes, the funnest part of the game is still stabbing a buddy and doing a brief victory dance when you finally run to the end of the level and get eaten by a giant worm. Movement feels a bit more fluid, but for the most part the gameplay hasn’t really changed because it doesn’t need to. The broadsword gives you slower but more ranged attacks, the bow and arrow lets you snipe your foes, and the dagger is for quick, dirty kills up close and personal.ĭespite the new added bells and whistles, much of Nidhogg’s gameplay feels very familiar. Aside from your basic sword you also have a broadsword, bow and arrow, and a dagger. It does, of course, add some fun new features. Nidhogg 2 keeps a lot of Nidhogg’s core gameplay, which makes sense because Nidhogg wasn’t really lacking in that department. The controls are simple, but you can actually pull off quite a few fancy moves in the game, and its fencing system is surprisingly deep. It’s a 2D multiplayer swordfighting game, and the objective is to kill your enemy and run to the end of the level, only to be eaten by a giant monster (that’s what counts for victory here). However, when it finally released, it was a hit. Messhof took forever to release Nidhogg on PC, and for the longest time it was only available at game events. Nidhogg is the brainchild of Messhof, a prolific indie developer known for games with simple graphics but fairly complex gameplay. We should probably start by describing Nidhogg. Sequels are tricky business, because developers have a dilemma: Do they evolve the concept and risk alienating fans of the original, or do they just add more content and risk being called unoriginal? Well, Nidhogg 2 has gone for both approaches, in an attempt to have their cake and eat it too.
